What is Certification?

Table of contents Rationale for Digital Certification and Suitable Certifiers

Learn about our secure digital certification and approved list of suitable certifiers.

Certification is the process of using a representation from a trusted individual to prove that copies of documents are authentic reproductions of the original documents.

Where the documents are identification documents such as passports, certification is also used to ensure that the identification documents relate to the person presenting the document.

Why Digital Certification Matters

The digital certification process is particularly important for non-face-to-face relationships where there exists an increased risk of fraud.

Our Secure Certification Process

We use an advanced electronic signature (Level 2 - Assurance Level Substantial) which, under the European Union (EU) legislative provisions in Article 25 of the eIDAS, is sufficient and fully compliant for Anti-Money Laundry (AML)/ Know Your Client (KYC) purposes. The criteria by which we measure this are:

  • It is uniquely linked to the signatory because the certificate is uniquely linked via the signatory’s email address.

  • It is capable of identifying the signatory because the name, contact details and email of the signatory are shown.

  • It is created using electronic signature creation data that the signatory can, with a high level of confidence, use under their sole control: it uses an ISO 32000 tamper-proof signature with a unique secure link provided to the signatory for their confirmation.

  • It is linked to the data signed therewith in such a way that any subsequent change in the data is detectable. The certificate is an ISO 32000 tamper-proof signature that will be wiped if the attached underlying document is modified or altered.
